    Sub-mm counterparts to Lyman-break galaxies

    We summarize the main results from our SCUBA survey of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z~3. Analysis of our sample of LBGs reveals a mean flux of S850=0.6±\pm0.2 mJy, while simple models of emission based on the UV properties predict a mean flux about twice as large. Known populations of LBGs are expected to contribute flux to the weak sub-mm source portion of the far-IR background, but are not likely to comprise the bright source (S850>5 mJy) end of the SCUBA-detected source count. The detection of the LBG, Westphal-MM8, at 1.9 mJy suggests that deeper observations of individual LBGs in our sample could uncover detections at similar levels, consistent with our UV-based predictions. By the same token, many sub-mm selected sources with S850<2 mJy could be LBGs.     The stability of charged-particle motion in sheared magnetic reversals

    We consider the motion of charged particles in a static magnetic reversal with a shear component, which has application for the stability of current sheets, such as in the Earth's geotail and in solar flares. We examine how the topology of the phase space changes as a function of the shear component by. At zero by, the phase space may be characterized by regions of stochastic and regular orbits (KAM surfaces). Numerically, we find that as we vary by, the position of the periodic orbit at the centre of the KAM surfaces changes. We use multiple-timescale perturbation theory to predict this variation analytically. We also find that for some values of by, all the KAM surfaces are destroyed owing to a resonance effect between two timescales, making the phase space globally chaotic. By investigating the stability of the solutions in the vicinity of the fixed point, we are able to predict for what values of by this happens and when the KAM surfaces reappear

    A microscope system is described for viewing an area of a living body tissue that is rapidly moving, by maintaining the same area in the field-of-view and in focus. A focus sensing portion of the system includes two video cameras at which the viewed image is projected, one camera being slightly in front of the image plane and the other slightly behind it. A focus sensing circuit for each camera differentiates certain high frequency components of the video signal and then detects them and passes them through a low pass filter, to provide dc focus signal whose magnitudes represent the degree of focus. An error signal equal to the difference between the focus signals, drives a servo that moves the microscope objective so that an in-focus view is delivered to an image viewing/recording camera
